Check out some examples below of various labs and activities that we conduct during the course! Environmental Science requires many investigations to be able to apply course concepts and see them in practice.
Students will work collaboratively to set-up a three-tier system that will mimic a terrestrial, filtration, and freshwater aquatic system. Students will have to construct and collect data (plant height, soil/water pH, nitrates, phosphates, temperature) from each tier for around 3-months. Students will even get to put a fish into their aquatic chamber (be sure to name them!).
This lab will support students in long-term data collection. Prior to this course, students have primarily conduct single-day labs. Environmental science labs require investigations that span multiple days, weeks, and even months.
Our course takes several field trips throughout the year to see environmental science concepts in action. Most recently we visited Ocean Beach Lagoon/Estuary to support water monitoring efforts by the San Diego River Park Foundation. Take a look at the pictures from our trip - it was fun!
Check out the document below that describes many more labs and activities completed throughout the AP Environmental Science course. Please note this doesn't include all labs.
