Interviewed November 2009 by Sam Daley '10
How did your major in English contribute to your career? Any specific skills? Were there any advantages because of your major?
My major in English definitely helped my career. I was hired in to write articles for our trade magazine. Today, I serve as copy editor for all outgoing publications.
How did you end up choosing to be an English major?
I chose English because I always enjoyed writing. When I was in high school, I wanted to be a journalist and work for a magazine.
How has being an English major enriched your life outside of work?
I am a stickler for AP style writing. I notice everything around me, and I always find errors in whatever I'm reading, whether that be the newspaper, a magazine, or the many e-mails I receive from people.
In college, did you participate in any extra-curriculars or other activities? How did this affect your life?
I was on the women's soccer team and I wrote for the Kilikilik. Sports were always a part of my life growing up and, my senior year, I was the sports editor. I had a PR internship with the Toledo Mudhens, and I planned to work for a sports team, but once I graduated, professional teams had little job openings at the time, and I found my current job in the paper.
What do you do in your job? Would you be willing to give your contact info in case anyone would have additional questions?
I work for Professional Insurance Agents Association of Ohio, Inc. My title is Marketing Communication Manager. As I said before, I serve as the senior copy editor here, but I also am the sole graphic designer (which is definitely my favorite part of the job) and am the photographer. I also write almost all the copy for our promotions and direct mail. You can reach me at casei@ohiopia.com if you have any further questions.
What advice would you give to current or future English majors?
Association work is very versatile. I had no idea after graduating all the associations out there. I think I lucked out in getting a job with one. There are many writing opportunities and many ways to expand your career. For me, one of the best aspects is that because we offer education, advocacy, membership and other benefits to our members, and I'm always working on new things. It's never stale.
