Challenge week 1: Autumn Term - Task: Write about an extract from dystopian fiction '1984' using PEEAL paragraphs. Practice exploding the following quotations: 'The hallway smelt of boiled cabbage and old rag mats'; 'Outside, even through the shut window-pane, teh world looked cold.'
Example of exploded a quote: “there seemed to be no colour in anything”
Exploding the Quote :
The phrase “no colour” suggests lifelessness and dullness, as if the world Winston lives in has no joy or individuality.
The word “seemed” shows how the lack of colour is not just physical but also how Winston feels — his emotions and outlook are drained by the Party’s control.
The phrase “in anything” makes it sound total, as if the Party has sucked the life out of every part of society, leaving nothing bright or hopeful.
Orwell uses this description to show how totalitarianism destroys beauty and freedom, making life feel bleak and empty.
For the reader, this creates a depressing atmosphere and helps us imagine how crushing it would be to live in such a world.
1. Point (your main idea)
Start with a clear sentence saying what Orwell shows in the novel.
Example: Orwell shows that surveillance is used to control people and take away their freedom.
2. Evidence (quote from the book)
Pick a short, strong quote to back up your point.
Example: “Big Brother is watching you.”
3. Explanation (what the quote means)
Put the quote into your own words.
Example: This means that people are always being reminded that they have no privacy and are constantly being watched.
4. Analysis (effects and writer’s choices)
Think about why Orwell wrote it this way and what effect it has on the reader.
Example: The phrase makes people feel scared and powerless, because they can never relax or feel safe. Orwell uses it to show how a government can control people by making them live in fear.
5. Link (back to the big idea)
Finish by connecting your point to the wider theme or Orwell’s message.
Example: This shows Orwell’s warning about the dangers of giving a government too much power and losing personal freedom.
