Kindergarten Goals
By the end of the school year, the kindergarten student will be able to write one sentence that correlates with their drawing. The student will use inventive spelling with the use of letters that represent the initial and final consonant sounds of many words. For example, ct for cat.Â
1st Grade Goals
By the end of the school year, the first-grade student will be able to write at least three high-quality sentences depicting a sequence of events. These sentences will include transition words such as first, next, and last. They will also include details and descriptive language such as adjectives and adverbs. They will use correct capitalization and end marks. Inventive spelling will be easily read and some high-frequency words will be spelled correctly.
2nd Grade Goals
By the end of the school year, the second-grade student will write at least five high-quality sentences depicting a sequence of events with a beginning, middle, and end. These sentences will include transition words and phrases such as at first, after that, and finally. They will also include details and descriptive language such as adjectives and adverbs. They will use correct capitalization, end marks, and commas in a series. Inventive spelling will be easily read and most high-frequency words will be spelled correctly.
3rd Grade Goals
By the end of the school year, the third-grade student will write multiple paragraphs depicting a story or personal experience with a beginning, middle, and end. Each event will be described with supporting details. These sentences will include transition words and phrases such as at the beginning, the next day, and at the end. They will also include details and descriptive language such as adjectives (bright, grumpy, quick, etc.) and adverbs (when, closely, while, nearly, where, unfairly, although, etc). They will use correct capitalization, end marks, and commas in a series. They will use proper indentation for each paragraph. Inventive spelling will be easily read and most high-frequency words will be spelled correctly.
4th-5th Grade Goals
By the end of the school year, fourth and fifth-grade students will write multiple paragraphs depicting a story or personal experience with a beginning, middle, and end. Each event will be described with supporting details. These paragraphs will include transition words and phrases such as initially, immediately following, and consequently. They will also include details and descriptive language such as adjectives (fragile, confused, raspy, etc.) and adverbs (when, easily, while, absolutely, where, highly, although, etc). They will build the characters and storyline through dialogue, actions, and thoughts. The setting will also be clearly depicted. Through careful word choice, their own style will start to emerge. Grammar, punctuation, and spelling will not interfere with the ability to read and understand the narrative.
6th-8th Grade Goals
By the end of the school year, sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade students will write multiple paragraphs depicting a sequence of events that relays an autobiographical incident. This incident in their lives will focus on the discovery of new knowledge or awareness or a noteworthy outcome. The focus may be humorous, frightening, sorrowful, or contented. The writer will include and organize the appropriate events and details that relay their point. Through careful word choice, their own style will show. Grammar, punctuation, and spelling will not interfere with the ability to read and understand the narrative.
