Overview:
OnRamps Rhetoric is a college-level English course offered through a partnership with the University of Texas at Austin and taught by Dr. Lauren Williams at Hearne High School. It is designed for highly motivated 12th grade students who are already strong writers, critical thinkers, and comfortable with managing academic work independently.
Focus:
Rather than a traditional literature-based class, OnRamps Rhetoric focuses on rhetorical analysis and argumentation—skills used in college, professional communication, and public speaking. Students analyze how people use language to persuade and position themselves in society, and they learn to craft their own well-reasoned, research-supported arguments.
Course Structure:
Dual-enrollment: Students are enrolled in both high school and a University of Texas course
College-level readings, writing assignments, and expectations
Emphasis on independent learning, time management, and self-reflection
College professors grade university-level work; the high school teacher provides support
Workload & Expectations:
Weekly reading and analysis assignments
Multiple writing projects, including rhetorical analysis, synthesis, and research papers
Participation in discussions and peer review
Responsible for managing deadlines and digital platforms independently
Rigor Level:
Very rigorous – Equivalent to a first-year college writing course
Best for self-driven students who already excel in reading and writing
Eligibility:
12th graders who have passed both English I and English II STAAR EOC exams by the end of 10th grade
Strong academic record in prior English courses
Recommended for students interested in college credit or college readiness
