During the 2020-2021 school year, Nature's NEAR developed 4 new programs that were offered in a hybrid model. Our programs included a 40-minute engaging and interactive virtual presentation led by the high school co-op students followed by a Q&A session. Teachers were provided with an activity to do outside or virtually with their students after the presentation. While we are no longer offering the virtual presentations, we have compiled all the post-resources/activities we created, both virtual and in person, here on this page for you to use with your students anytime!
Created by Co-op Students: Cora, Emily, Gracie, Josh, & Taronish
Our Pilot Program, Project Leaf, compares human organ systems to those of a tree to highlight our commonalities. The outdoor activity, Plant Concentration, encourages students to make detailed observations and make meaningful connections with the trees and plants in their schoolyard.
"We had such a great time and it was managed so well. We loved the collaborative nature of this program. It tied beautifully to our soils unit and deepened our understand of indigenous ties to nature." - Rozlyn Burns (Ethel Gardiner)
Created by Co-op Students: Ben, Cora, Jamie, & Taronish
Project Frost explores the different strategies animals use to adapt and survive during the winter (migration, hibernation, & acclimatization). Dive deep into the subnivean zone with our outdoor subnivean survival game, or follow our subnivean fort framework complete with steps, activities, and resources!
What a FUN project from start to finish! It was such a memorable and meaningful project for both the students and the teacher! - Danielle Barbu (John William Boich)

Project Pollen: The Insect Initiative focuses on the important role pollinators play in our ecosystem and explores pollinator biodiversity. This project allows students to reflect on their own dependance on pollinators and what they can do to help them. The team created a Project Pollen website with interactive activities including a video game called "Busy Bee" created/coded by co-op student, Evan!
"This was a fantastic experience for my students to review many of the topics we covered during our Biodiversity unit. I also loved that they learned more in depth about the purpose of our pollinator garden." - Laurie Thibaudeau (Ethel Gardiner)
Created by Co-op Students: Chase, Hilary, Summer, & Tomas
Project Feather explores the biodiversity of local birds, how you can identify them, and what makes them all unique. Students learn more about the challenges birds face and reflect upon ways they can help our feathered friends.
"The Grade 5s are generally interested in learning about birds but this
presentation put them over the moon" -Nirusha Vigneswaraoothy (Virtual East)
