In this class, students will work toward individualized goals in reading and writing. We will follow a Structured Literacy approach by using the Wilson Reading System and Equipped for Reading Success programs in order to build strong reading and writing skills.
What is Structured Literacy? Click here for the International Dyslexia Association of Ontario page describing Structured Literacy. Below are some links to help understand how the brain learns how to read.
How does the Reading Brain Work?
Math
In our class, we will focus primarily on Number at grade level. We will apply our knowledge of operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) in as many real life scenarios as possible. All other strands will be taught and practiced as well, however the Number strand will be practiced on a daily basis.
Technology
Every student in this class has prescribed technology. This will help support learning as well as independence. We will focus on how to use this technology to be able to access curriculum and truly show what we know without any obstacles. Technology is also a great tool to practice self-control and time management.
Learning Skills
Strong learning skills are the pathway to success. Each week, students will choose a specific expectation from our Learning Skills to work on throughout the week. At the end of the week, students will self-evaluate how they did working toward their goal. They will be encouraged to recognize the obstacles and celebrate successes. Classmates will support each other in helping their peers in reaching their goals.
