Toileting by Myself

Every classroom is different. The flow of the day is flexible to respond to the needs of the students within each class.

*Some classrooms have free-flow snack, where for the morning portion of the day, students learn to self-regulate to have their snack when they are feeling hungry. The snack table would remain open in a designated area, and students would have a system to let the educators know they have eaten (such as moving a magnet with their name). Educators always remind students when it is close to closing the snack table to make sure every student has had their snack.

*Outdoor time is also different in each classroom - some classes begin their day outside for the first hour, while others come out mid-morning for their outdoor learning time. Some classes choose to end their day with a smaller outdoor learning section before dismissal.

*Some classrooms choose to have a quiet activities section within their day (typically after lunch) to relax and refocus for the afternoon. Some classes engage in small groups during this time.

Here is our Kindergarten Outdoor Space:

We also go on nature walks and outdoor field trips:

The Ministry of Education states that, "In the Kindergarten program, learning in the outdoors is included as part of the instructional day, and the educators play an active role, engaging with children in an inquiry stance as they play, explore, and learn together outside the classroom".

*The Connections between Outdoor & Learning:

  • natural curiosity

  • sense of wonder

  • play is a vehicle for learning

  • connecting to the natural environment contributes to a child's mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being

  • rich, authentic learning experiences

  • the vestibular sense or 'the balance sense' - the awareness of your body in a space, it is the first sensory sense to develop, and is required for learning and development

  • opportunities for exploration, engagement, creation, building, risk-taking, self-regulation, social collaboration, and more

  • We enjoy spending time in all seasons and all weather outside: "encouraging a child to go outside in all weather builds resilience, but more importantly it saves them from spending their life merely tolerating the "bad" days in favour of a handful of "good" ones - a life of endless expectations and conditions where happiness hinges on sunshine" -Nicolette Sowder

PC Kindergarten FAQ

Learning Stories

A sneak peek into some of the learning activities from PC Kindergarten Classrooms. Each classroom provides different learning opportunities for different students. The activities have multiple entry points to reach every child.

Students interests are reflected in the activities, while educators incorporate the learning. These learning opportunities create student engagement, and learning can be extended, and challenged through educators responding to the students.
