Kindergarten Students enter the fenced-in Kindergarten play area located directly across from the portable, starting at 8:25 am which is when supervision begins. A playground supervisor will be at the gate to welcome your child from 8:25 am to 8:40 am, when the morning bell sounds. Please note that parents are not permitted in the play yard.

*It is important for your child to arrive at school on time, prior to 8:40 am since classroom routines and activities begin punctually at that time. If you happen to arrive at school after 8:40 am please proceed to the front door of the school with your child where you will be required to buzz the office and wait for a staff member.
At no time may children be dropped off at the door of their classroom by a parent or caregiver since we often start the day outside with outdoor learning so we may not enter our classrooms until later. It is imperative that all children are received at school directly by a staff member.
Our Kindergarten students are ready to be dismissed at 2:55 pm just before the dismissal bell rings at 3:00 pm. This allows you a few minutes of flexibility when picking up your child especially since our parking lot can become quite congested at the end of the day. This 5 minute window also gives teachers the ability to dismiss each individual child directly to his/her parent or caregiver.
Pauline Johnson has a strict Nut Free Policy as some children in our school suffer from life-threatening allergies. Foods containing any type of nuts must not be brought to school. Please check all packaging carefully. If your child has an epi-pen, they must carry it with them in a fanny pouch at all times, and medical forms will need to be filled out for the office.
Children eat in their classrooms twice a day. First Nutrition Break is from 10:20 -10:40 and Second Nutrition Break is from 12:40 -1:00. We encourage you to pack healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, crackers, cheese, sandwiches, granola bars, leftovers from dinner, etc. A reusable water bottle labelled with your child's name is also a great idea. Please ensure that your child can open and close his/her food containers and wrappers. It's a good idea to practice this at home prior to the start of school in September.
Your child will need to bring a backpack to school every day to carry school work, notices, library books, snack, lunch, etc. A standard sized backpack that has only one or two zippered compartments works best.
Tip/Hint: Have your child practise packing the backpack, doing up the zipper, and putting it on his/her back before school begins in September.
PLEASE LABEL ALL CLOTHING AND BELONGINGS WITH YOUR CHILD’S NAME: jackets, hats, shoes, snack bags, juice/water containers.... Many families order from Mabel's Labels. If you are interested here is the link Mabel's Labels .
No matter the weather, we love to go outside. Your child should be dressed appropriately for participation in outdoor activities. Hats, neck warmers, gloves, snow pants, snow boots, rain boots, splash pants, and raincoats make outdoor learning fun on chilly or wet days. If it has rained the day/evening before your child’s school day, please ensure your child wears rubber boots and splash pants as our outdoor play area can become muddy. If the day is warm and sunny, please ensure you apply sunscreen on your child at home and that your child has a sunhat and water bottle. If you feel your child will need to reapply sunscreen at school, please provide a solid stick type. (Don't forget to label all items with your child's name!)
Please send a pair of non-marking, VELCRO running shoes that can be kept at school. VELCRO shoes are recommended as this is a easy and quick way for children to independently change their shoes. Children are required to have indoor running shoes at school all year in order to ensure foot safety in the classroom and gymnasium. Please label both pairs of shoes (indoor and outdoor) with your child’s name. Kindergarten children have a supervised outdoor recess after each nutrition break in our fenced-in Kindergarten yard (10:40-11:00 am and 1:00-1:20 pm).
Children entering Year 1 of Kindergarten should be fully toilet trained, unless there are special circumstances. This means that they need to be independent with recognizing when they need to go, pulling clothing up and down, as well as wiping. Teachers do not enter washroom stalls with children. If your child has a bladder accident, he/she will be asked to go to the bathroom and change into fresh clothes - verbal guidance is offered. If your child has a bowel accident, you or your emergency contact will be called and asked to come to the school to clean and change your child.
Students are permitted to bring 1 small toy to school with them for outdoor nutrition break time. We call this item their POCKET TOY. This item MUST fit in their pocket. We suggest you don’t send any toys that are super special incase it gets misplaced or broken.
During the school year, we will make special crafts and have opportunities for cooking and baking. Periodically, we may ask for donations to enable us to provide these special activities. Although we are very appreciative of donations, not all families are in a position to donate. If you are asked to donate something and you are not able to do so, please just send a short private note to your child’s educator.
During the school year, most notices and messages will be sent home electronically from educators to keep you informed of the inquiries children are working on and of special activities that have been planned. Regular notices will also be sent home from the office.
It is essential for parents to notify us of upcoming absences and the dates of holidays that may be taking place during the school year (you will also need to enter them into the attendance system). We also need to know if your child is to be dismissed to someone other than the regular parent/care provider. If you need to pick your child up for an appointment please come to the front door to be buzzed in. Our school secretary will then call down to the classroom and we will have your child get ready to be picked up. A staff member will then bring your child to the front door.
Emails are the easiest way to communicate with your child’s educators. Please make sure to include both educators in each email. We give a grace period of 24-48 hours for the emails to be answered.
E-mail addresses will be provided to you once the children have been placed in classrooms with specific teachers.
Don’t forget to sign up for School Cash Online. It will make paying for Field Trips, Special Lunches etc very easy and convenient. Check out all of the info online at:
You will receive a yellow notice with your child’s name and a family number on it. Please fill it in and return to your child’s educator.
