To ensure all students have equitable access to meaningful extracurricular sports and recreational opportunities in HDSB, regardless of ability.
Adaptive Sport is for any student in Grades K-12 who faces barriers to participation in extcurricular sports at school, due to their abilities. This includes, but is not limited to, students with physical or intellectual disabilities, neurodivergent conditions (e.g., Autism, ADD/ADHD, Tourettes), behavioural disabilities, undiagnosed challenges, mental health or chronic health conditions. Students without disabilities are also welcome to participate, as long as the design and implementation of the program is centred around the youth with disabilities.
The Canadian Physical Activity Report Card for Children and Adolescents with Disabilities highlights a critical gap: we have no measurable data on school sport and physical activity participation for youth with disabilities.
Most of the report was marked “Incomplete” because there are no systems in place to provide, track, or develop consistent programming for youth with disabilities, especially at school.
Every child deserves the opportunity to experience the benefits of sport—belonging, confidence, and joy.
