Success Criteria:
I write in a voice that matches the character
I refer to key events, feelings or changes from the story
I show emotion and empathy in my writing
My letter or poem has structure and clarity
I reflect one of the novel’s themes: courage, survival, injustice, or hope
Design a simple dice-based board game inspired by the journeys in Refugee.
Use:
A dice mechanic (or spinner/coin)
Chance and consequence
Real challenges characters faced
Include:
A map or board
Event cards
Rules and a way to win or survive
Success Criteria:
My game reflects events or themes from the book
I include fair rules and clear instructions
The game is playable and tested (even by a friend!)
I explain how the game helps others understand the refugee experience
Create a detailed map that shows the journeys of Josef, Isabel, and Mahmoud.
Include:
The countries and key locations they passed through
Key events or obstacles along their paths
Bonus: Add the countries Germany overtook during WWII (linking to Josef’s timeline)

My map includes all three characters and follows the events in the book
I label all major cities/countries and clearly show travel routes
I include 2–3 key events for each character along their journey
