WEPs are written annually for each identified gifted students at the secondary level who takes honors and advanced coursework (gifted service). HCSD does not provide formal gifted services at K-6, but teachers do differentiate and extend their instruction to meet the needs of our identified gifted and high-performing students in the district. Additionally, the district sponsors enrichment programs at each elementary school and hosts Camp Invention Summer Camps for identified gifted students in grades 4-6. WEPs are created in the ABRE Plans Application and can be accessed and reviewed by parents, administrators, teachers, and students in the ABRE Student Application. Parents can access their student's WEP through the ABRE Parent Portal.
Written Acceleration Plans (WAPs)
As required by the Ohio Department of Education, Hamilton City Schools has developed a board-adopted acceleration process. The process of acceleration is used to match appropriate learning challenges with a student’s abilities when such challenges are not available at the student’s current grade level. There are three main types of student acceleration:
Whole-grade acceleration: The practice of assigning a student on a full-time basis to a higher grade level than is typical given the student’s age for the purpose of providing access to appropriately challenging learning opportunities.
Individual subject acceleration: The practice of assigning a student to a higher grade level than is typical given the student’s age for the purpose of providing access to appropriately challenging learning opportunities in one or more subject areas.
Early admission to kindergarten: The practice of admitting a student to kindergarten who has not yet reached the typical age at which students are admitted to kindergarten for the purpose of providing access to appropriately challenging learning opportunities.
Referrals for acceleration must be received between March 1 and April 15 of the year preceding the requested placement. Whole-grade and individual subject acceleration decisions are made by an acceleration team that may include parent(s)/guardian(s). The Iowa Acceleration Scale is used to predict a student’s success with an accelerated placement.
