Vocal Music with Jay Beams
Welcome to the 2025-2026 school year!
I am so excited to begin a new year of music at West School. One of my goals is for students to have enjoyable musical experiences that lead to lifelong music appreciation and participation. Some class time will be spent in singing games that are fun and interactive, but that also reinforce a musical skill or concept. We strive for in-tune singing, keeping a steady beat, beginning musical literacy and moving rhythmically. All students are learning, understanding and developing musical concepts, terms, and symbols from transitional kindergarten through fifth grade. These are introduced sequentially through songs that students have learned. Singing and playing instruments are a streamlined part of class.
Most music classes begin by singing a musical greeting and then singing the 5 expectations. 1. Be safe. 2. Be Polite. 3. Be Cooperative. 4. Be Responsible. 5. Be Kind. Many students could sing these five to you with a little prompting.
We will be making some changes to 5th grade music this year. Mr. Andrew Luu and I will be co-teaching most weeks. It will be a hybrid of vocal and instrumental music. Much more information will be forthcoming in the weeks to come.
Please be sure to take note of the following performance dates.
