Physical Education Standards

At the elementary level, grades kindergarten through 5th will adhere to the overarching content standards:

Standard 1: Students demonstrate the motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.

Standard 2: Students demonstrate knowledge of movement concepts, principles, and strategies that apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.

Standard 3: Students assess and maintain a level of physical fitness to improve health and performance.

Standard 4: Students demonstrate knowledge of physical fitness concepts, principles, and strategies to improve health and performance.

Standard 5: Students demonstrate and utilize knowledge of psychological and sociological concepts, principles, and strategies that apply to the learning and performance of physical activity.

Primary grade students will focus on the basic locomotor and non-locomotor skills, the basis for all movement. The locomotor skills include: walk, run, jump, skip, hop, gallop, leap, and slide. The non-locomotor skills, or movements around the body’s axis, include: swing, twist, turn, sway, shake, bend, stretch, etc. Further movement concepts, such as pathways, direction, and support will be emphasized. In the upper grades, more complex movement patterns are applied in games and other activities. Good Sportsmanship is a major component of the program and will be stressed at all times.

Fourth and fifth grade students will participate in the Fitnessgram, an assessment of overall fitness, in the fall and spring. Fifth grade results are submitted to the state in the spring, while fourth graders use their results to set goals and prepare for the following year. The Fitnessgram includes non-competitive assessment in the following areas: upper body strength and endurance, aerobic endurance, abdominal strength and endurance, trunk strength and flexibility, lower back flexibility, and body composition.
