Dear HCSD Parents,
I’m thrilled to be joining the HCSD elementary music team this year and to launch our brand-new hybrid band and choir program for all 5th graders. Your child is about to begin a great journey with many possibilities. Since this is our first year running this program, we’re working hard to iron out details to create a fun, engaging, and meaningful music experience for your child.
This year, your child will:
Learn the fundamentals of instrumental music
Build effective practice habits
Explore harmony singing in a choir setting
Try musical improvisation
Develop responsibility through instrument care
Perform music from a variety of styles
Build skills to prepare them for middle school and beyond
With the privilege of playing an instrument comes responsibility! Students will:
Practice at home: The first sounds may not be concert-ready—but every musician starts somewhere!
Care for their instrument: Thanks to HSF and state funding, most students will receive brand-new Yamaha instruments designed to last for years with proper care.
We’ll send home an instrument care contract soon, along with tips and expectations for families.
Music classes will increase from 30 to 45 minutes twice a week, and every 5th grader will play a band instrument.
Instrument choices by school:
North: Clarinet, Trumpet, Euphonium
South: Flute, Clarinet, Trombone
West: Clarinet, Trumpet, Euphonium
Students who participated in Beginning Band last year may continue on their current instrument, even if it’s not listed above.
During the first few weeks, students will try all three instruments available at their school and rank their preferences. Instrument assignments will be based on these preferences, available inventory, and other factors.
Students will perform twice this year:
Winter Showcase: Separate assemblies at each school in December
Spring Concert: A combined concert featuring all three schools at the Crocker Gym, Wednesday, April 29, 2026 (evening)
We’re so excited to start this new chapter in music education and can’t wait to see your child’s growth this year. Thank you for your grace, support, and enthusiasm!
Onward,
Mr. Lu
