After Sylvanas Windrunner shattered the helm of domination, the veil between the shadowlands and Azeroth was destroyed. Allowing the forces of The Jailer, the mawsworn to storm into Azeroth. The val'kyr, servants of Sylvanas, kidnaped major leaders of the alliance and horde, some of which being Anduin Wrynn, Jaina Proundmore, Baine Bloodhoof, and Thrall. When the Helm of domination was shattered, the Lich King Bolvar Fordragon was freed from his frozen throne and he was heavily injured with his fight with Sylvanas, the knights of the ebon blade, an organization of free death knights, came to rescue him from Icecrown. He told them what had happened, along with telling them to find champions who could rescue their friends. After attacking the maw, the base of operations for the jailer, finding their friends, but ultimately, only the champion was able to escape the maw, with all the other leaders being trapped with domination magic. When the champion arrived in oribos, the eternal city, they were escorted to the arbiter, the one being that sends all souls into their afterlives. Disturbed at the new knowledge that winged people were in League with the jailer, the honored voice of the arbiter, Tal Inara, sent the champion to bastion to investigate. After bastion was attacked by the maldraxxi, the forces of maldraxxus, champions were sent to maldraxxus to investigate, after beginning a civil war against the houses of maldraxxus, they were sent to the safety of the house of the chosen, but when it was discovered that the true baron Alexandros mograin was not dead, but instead trapped in the maw, champions went to free him, and in the process, freed Alexandros' son, Darion mograin, After the two reunited, the group traveled back to maldraxxus, and stopped the traitorous baron vyraz, but even though vyraz escaped, the true champions of the house of the chosen then opened the seat of the primus, defeating the forces of vyraz in the end. But they discovered a warning left by the primus in the seat, saying that Zovaal, also known as the jailer, was free, and that the primus was dead. soon, the champion, now known as the maw walker, having returned from the maw twice, went to ardenweald to warn the winter queen of the jailer's escape, after saving the wild seed of Ysera, former aspect of the green dragonflight. And combatting the evil Drust who were corrupting the night fae people. Soon, the winter queen came to realize that some must be saved during the anima drought. After convincing the winter queen to aid them, champions went to send the primus's message to the lord of revendreth, sire denathrius. But not all is as it seems in revendreth, as champions went on, they learned about a rebellion going on, and because of this rebellion, denathrius was unable to send aid to defeat the jailer. after learning why the rebellion was formed, the reason being prince renathral discovering that denathirus was behind the anima drought. after learning this information, a daring assault was lead on castle nathria, resulting in a large part of the castle to be thrown into the maw, as sire denathrias revealed his true loyalties, in which he revealed he was loyal to the jailer, and was feeding him anima reserves into the maw. After convincing Tal Inara to take action against the jailer, the champions chose their own path, joining one of the covenants of the shadowlands and helping renew their purpose. Along the way, bolvar fordragon called out to the champions, telling them to enter the maw once more to save their friends, the first being baine bloodhoof. after saving him and other champions of the alliance and horde, they met the runecarver, a captive being held to the jailers will. After recovering the runecarvers memories, champions learned that the runecarver was actually the primus captive after his confrontation with zovaal. When zovaal expanded the maw to envelop oribos, the maw walkers attacked him within his seat of power, the sanctum of domination. And instead clashed out against sylvanas, but the maw walkers were too late, as zovaal was able to take the arbiters sigil from her, allowing him to escape to zereth moris, land of the first ones. But sylavans did not make it as Zovaal revealed his true intentions, make all life serve him. But sylvanas responded with anger, saying she will never serve any master. So, the jailer restored a piece of her, rendering her unconscious. But she delivered a broken message, "He... cannot... reach...the..." she would have said "sepulcher.", but she was unconscious before she was able to say it. After the primus used the new sigils of the shadowland's covenants to open a portal to zereth moris to pursue Zovaal. after Zovaals death in the seplucher of the first ones, the kryian pelegoes took the mantle of arbiter, restoring order to the shadowlands. During sylvanas' judement pelegoes said that her actions were tainted with the jailers influence, but sylvanas responded by saying that her actions were hers alone. And then she did something unexpected, submitting to her worst enemy, tyrande whisperwind. Trynades judgement for sylvanas was that she would desroy every soul trapped in the maw, and send it to the arbiter for its rightrul judgement. with this syvanas traveled to the maw, encountering anduin wrynn in the process. He said his hands dont feel clean, so he left, his whereabouts unknown.
