Earth is the third planet from the Sun and the only planet that has life. While large amounts of water can be found in the Solar system, only earth has liquid water above the surface. About 71% of Earth's surface is made up of the ocean. The rest of Earth's surface is land, consisting of continents and islands. Earth's crust is made of slowly moving tectonic plates, that sometimes collide with each other to produce mountain ranges, volcanoes, and earthquakes.
Earth's atmosphere consists mostly of nitrogen and oxygen. More sunlight is received by tropical regions than polar regions. There is a lot of Water vapor in the atmosphere and it condenses into clouds that cover most of the planet. Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere like carbon dioxide trap some energy from the sun which keeps the Earth warm.
