Sporting Lisbon is a Portuguese club from Lisbon, Portugal. They play in the Primeira Liga also known as the Portuguese First Division. They were founded in 1897 but it wasn't made official until 1902 and are one of the Big Three. The Big Three are the only three clubs that have never been relegated from the top division, which includes Benfica and FC Porto.
Cristiano Ronaldo joined Academia Sporting (Sporting Academy) in 1997 when he was only 12. At 16, he was moved up a level by the first-team manager at the time, László Bölöni. He then became the first player in the club's history to play for the under-16, under-17, and under-18 teams, the B team, and the first team in a single season! On August 14th, 2002, Ronaldo made his first senior team debut in a UCL qualifier against Italian team Inter Milan in the 58th minute. When Sporting Lisbon played a friendly against Manchester United, Ronaldo played a crucial role in their 3-1 win. This is when Sir Alex Ferguson, coach of United, knew Cristiano was special.
