What’s happening? The Federal Aviation Administration is targeting video gamers as the next generation of air traffic controllers, launching a fresh recruitment campaign to address persistent staffing shortages. Backed by the Department of Transportation, the initiative highlights how gaming skills such as quick decision-making, focus, and multitasking translate to high-pressure air traffic control roles. Officials say the approach aims to connect with younger applicants while modernizing hiring outreach.
Eligibility: Candidates must be US citizens and aged 30 or younger (with exceptions). Applications open on April 17, with the FAA planning to accept up to 8,000 candidates before closing the window. While a college degree is not mandatory for most applicants, candidates must pass aptitude tests, health and security clearances, and undergo intensive training at the FAA academy. With 11,000 controllers active and 4,000 trainees, the FAA needs more candidates to reach its full staffing of 14,663.
Concerns: Critics highlight risks, citing recent tragedies like the 2025 Reagan Airport mid-air collision killing 67 and the Air Canada crash into a LaGuardia firetruck that killed two pilots, blaming short-staffing and workload strain. While unions like the National Air Traffic Controllers Association endorse outreach to gamers if standards remain rigorous, skeptics question whether gaming aptitude guarantees performance in life-or-death scenarios.
