Accounting 1
Prerequisite: Principles of Business, Marketing, and Finance
Curriculum: This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of accounting concepts, principles, and procedures. Students will investigate the field of accounting, including how it is impacted by industry standards as well as economic, financial, technological, international, social, legal, and ethical factors. Students will reflect on this knowledge as they engage in the process of recording, classifying, summarizing, analyzing, and communicating accounting information. Students will formulate and interpret financial information for use in management decision making. This course covers accounting theories, practices, and Microsoft Excel.
Course Content:
1. Introduction to Accounting.
2. The Basic Accounting Cycle.
3. Accounting for a Payroll System.
4. The Accounting Cycle for a Merchandising Business.
5. Financial Statement Analysis.
Student Goals
The main objective of this course is to introduce students to the double-entry system of accounting for both sole proprietorships and corporations by using real-world applications and connections.
Other important objectives include the following:
1. To help students develop an understanding of the economic activities affecting businesses.
2. To help students learn to analyze and interpret financial data.
3. To help students develop personal and professional skills.
4. To help students understand the relationship between the manual system of accounting and Microsoft Excel.
