Hook 'Em Here: Harlingen is a collaborative project between Harlingen CISD and the University of Texas at Austin (UT) that offers a paid internship to selected UT College of Education undergraduates where they have the opportunity to live and work in Harlingen, TX. This five-week summer real-world learning experience will provide UT students the opportunity to engage in the classroom with a certified teacher, participate in a community service project with the United Way, and immerse in the local culture of Harlingen and the Rio Grande Valley.

Over the 5-week period, interns will be in classrooms every Monday-Thursday each week from 7:30 am-3:00 pm. On Fridays, they will have half-days dedicated to learning about the culture behind the Lower Rio Grande Valley through community-based activities. During the weekends, students will have the freedom to visit historical sites, places of interest, and/or community events.
To lower the cost of travel, housing, meals, etc., interns will receive a $2,000 Dean's Community Service Award.
They will earn an hourly rate of $12/hour, which approximates to $1,650 for the five weeks.
Housing accommodations at a reduced/free rate will be provided to student who need it.
Fourteen College of Education students will be selected for this internship:
At most, 10 interns will be placed at an elementary school campus.
At most, 4 interns will be placed at a middle school campus.
Students selected for Hook 'EM Here: Harlingen internship will be employed under HCISD. They are required to complete a background check with fingerprinting and proof of tuberculosis vaccination before May 27, 2024.
