Why MTA?
(Multisensory Teaching Approach - by MTS Publications)
At the Harlingen CISD’s Dyslexia Therapy Training Center, we are committed to providing research-based, structured literacy instruction that empowers educators and supports student success. To achieve this, we have selected the Multisensory Teaching Approach (MTA) as our primary curriculum, as it aligns with the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy principles, proven to be the most effective methods for students with dyslexia.
Developed by Margaret Taylor Smith and published by MTS Publications, MTA is a comprehensive, systematic, and multisensory program explicitly designed for students with dyslexia and related language-based learning differences. Rooted in the Orton-Gillingham approach, MTA follows a structured, sequential, and cumulative methodology, ensuring students master phonemic awareness, decoding, spelling, and reading fluency through direct and explicit instruction.
Proven Effectiveness – Builds reading and spelling skills systematically, reinforcing concepts through repetition, review, and application.
Multisensory & Structured – Engages visual, auditory, and kinesthetic pathways to reinforce learning and improve automaticity.
Comprehensive & Cumulative – Concepts are introduced sequentially, with built-in review cycles to ensure mastery and retention.
Meets Diverse Learner Needs – Designed for students with dyslexia but also benefits struggling readers and English Language Learners (ELLs).
Supports Educator Training – Provides clear instructional guidance, equipping teachers with research-backed strategies for effective intervention.
By implementing MTA, we are investing in best practices, teacher excellence, and student success, ensuring all learners receive the structured support they need to become confident, skilled readers.
