Mission & Vision
Mission & Vision
At HCISD’s Dyslexia Therapy Training Center, our mission is to equip educators with the expertise to support neurodiverse learners through Multisensory Structured Language Education.
Vision
Our vision is to create a community of educators skilled in multisensory techniques to empower students with neurodiversity.
Goal 1: Strengthening Reading and Literacy Skills
Using evidence-based, structured literacy programs to improve phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency, and comprehension.
Goal 2: Rewiring the Brain for Reading Success
Dyslexia therapy rewires the brain by leveraging its natural ability to adapt and form new neural connections, a process known as neuroplasticity. According to Dr. Sally Shaywitz, individuals with dyslexia often show underactivation in key left hemisphere regions responsible for reading, particularly the left temporoparietal and occipitotemporal areas. Through structured, evidence-based interventions like dyslexia therapy, systematically engages these underperforming areas, strengthening neural circuits essential for phonological processing and word recognition. Over time, as struggling readers repeatedly practice decoding and fluency exercises, the brain builds stronger, more efficient pathways, enabling smoother and more automatic reading. Functional MRI (fMRI) studies by Shaywitz and colleagues have demonstrated that after intensive intervention, brain activity in individuals with dyslexia shifts toward a more typical pattern, with increased activation in the left hemisphere reading network. The intervention rewires the brain. This rewiring process helps individuals with dyslexia develop greater reading fluency, comprehension, and confidence, ultimately allowing them to reach their full potential. Goal 3: Supporting Educators
Offering training to teachers to create a supportive literacy learning environment at school.
Multisensory Structured Language Education (MSLE)
Multisensory Structured Language Education (MSLE) is an evidence-based approach to teaching reading, writing, and language skills, particularly effective for individuals with dyslexia. It integrates visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile (VAKT) learning pathways to help students grasp language concepts.
