Program Implementation Cycle: Emotional Intelligence
One of Dr. Cano Freshman Academy's initiatives was to implement emotional intelligence within their campus in order to support the students' emotional, social and academic success.
Organizing: The initiative to include the curriculum of emotional intelligence within our campus began in October 2023. One counselor was assigned the responsibility as the emotional quotient (EQ)counselor in order to support the campus with this initiative. The counselor received training in order to learn the emotional intelligence components.
Planning: The EQ counselor trained the rest of the leadership team in learning the five different components of emotional intelligence and the staff during one of their professional development days. The first step was to introduce the components of emotional intelligence campus wide through engaging student activities and through all of the the classrooms.
Designing: Conversational Cards with emotional intelligence questions were created to be used by teachers in the classrooms. In addition, a week was design for students to highlight each of the five components of emotional intelligence by having dress up theme days. The counseling teams created lessons that were implemented for all of the students. Lessons were also created to be implemented for the following school years by the career and technology teachers.
Implementing: During a professional development day, teachers were given an overview of what emotional intelligence is, introduce to the conversational cards, and EQ week flyer. Teachers used the conversational cards organically in their classrooms. Teachers used the program Character Strong that was already used to integrate it with the emotional intelligence language and components. The counseling team implemented emotional intelligence lessons to all students.
Evaluating: Once the emotional intelligence lessons started to be implemented by the career and technology teachers the following school year (2024-2025), a survey was sent out by the career and technology department chair to get feedback and adjust lessons.
