About

Meet Ms. Casey

Hello, I am the School Counselor for Marshall Math Science Academy. I work with all students in the building grades 5th -8th. I have worked in the Harrisburg School District for over 7 years. Previously, I worked as a School Counselor in public schools in York City and Far Rockaway, NY.

I am originally from New York, and moved to Harrisburg 10 years ago. I am a mother of two teenagers who keep me very busy.

When I'm not at work, I make it a point to involve myself in activities that feed my passions and interests. I enjoy all things artistic, and focus on health and wellness for myself and my community. I am an advocate for mental health education and services for our youth as well as for the community as a whole. I believe continued education and support regarding mental health are vital in breaking down the stigmas surrounding mental health in Black and Brown communities.

Programs and Services

Individual Counseling:

The counselor is available to meet with students on an individual basis for any social, emotional or academic concerns. Referrals are through staff, parent, peer or self.

Group Counseling:

The counselor offers various support groups, based on student need, throughout the school year. Groups meet once a week, or as determined by the counselor. Students participate in groups through a parent or staff referral, or they may refer themselves. Written parent permission is required.

Truancy Intervention Plans (TIPS):

Meetings are conducted with either parents, or students (when parents aren't available or able to be reached) once a student has 5 or more unexcused absences. The purpose of the meetings are to make sure all stakeholders involved are on the same page regarding Harrisburg SD attendance policies and expectations, and to create a plan to improve our students' attendance.

Child Study Team Meetings:

Child Study Team meetings are designed to assist struggling students with strategies that may help improve academic performance. Team members provide input on student progress and suggest ways for students to be successful.

Student Assistance Program (SAP) Meetings:

The SAP team consists of community liaisons, counselor and building administration, tasked with providing assessments and services to students identified with either mental health or substance abuse concerns.

Classroom Presentations:

The counselor visits classrooms throughout the year to present information on College and Career Readiness and age appropriate social and emotional topics, based upon need.

8th Grade High School Applications:

The counselor arranges yearly high school visits for all 8th graders to Harrisburg High School's: SciTech and John Harris campuses. In addition, the counselor will distribute, collect and submit all high school applications for our 8th graders. Any questions regarding available high school options or procedures should be directed to Ms. Casey.
