How to Access Literary Criticisms Online
via the Hawaii State Public Library System
(also New York Times online)

YOU WILL NEED YOUR BARCODE and PIN# FROM YOUR STATE LIBRARY CARD
ACCESS DATABASES
Get to the HSPLS website http://www.librarieshawaii.org.
Select “Research” then under “Online databases” choose “View all online databases.”
Scroll down and use one or more of the following databases (you will need to search each of them separately):
Literature (Gale) and/or Literature Resource Center (Gale) – Primary sources, criticisms, analyses on literature across the centuries. A database of the Literary Criticisms (brown books) at HBA. ** RECOMMENDED
JSTOR – peer reviewed, academic journal articles. **RECOMMENDED
Enter your HSPLS Library Barcode and PIN (PIN is usually last 4 digits of phone number with which you registered) to get into database.
In the search box at top, type in your topic (name of author, title of work, specific topic) you can use more than one keyword (i.e. Hamlet revenge) click on search. If there are REFINING TOOLS available try to refine your search.
Each of these databases have a citing tool that will cite the article for you. Make sure you have an author name and title of the article as well as the title of the source!

You can also get free access to New York Times online from the homepage of the Hawaii State Public library (you'll have to login every few days - it is not continuous access). You can use your HBA email to create an account.
