The first step of removing the dam meant draining the lake. The lake was drained in 2019 and after further assessment it was decided that the lake needed to be removed. Once the dam is removed, the area will be turned into a neutral stream. The NEORSD plans to include native plants and maintain walking paths in the park.

Removing the Horseshoe Lake dam would mean restoring the ecosystem of Doan Brook. The Doan Brook Watershed Partnership supports the proposal to remove the dam. Specifically it would restore the instream habitat and habitat between the water and land of Doan Brook. These habitats are very important because they provide food and shelter to many animals, mostly fish.

On the other hand, the removal of the Horseshoe Lake dam would mean removing a central element of Shaker Heights. The Horseshoe Lake dam has a significant place in the hearts of Shaker residents. To combat this, there are plans that the removal/restoration process will be open to the public. TO BE EDITED!
