Earning LEED credits offer a way for cities and communities to become more sustainable through several different categories. These categories include natural systems and ecology, transportation and land use, water efficiency, energy and greenhouse gas emissions, materials and resources, quality of life, innovation. Within each category, LEED provides a series of requirements to meet in order to earn points within the topics as well as an incentive to earn credit in that certain category. By earning these credits, Shaker Heights will be able to become a green city that ties the community with the environment.
*For more information about LEED for cities, please visit their website.
Our first project included a presentation to the Shaker Heights Sustainability Committee in the Summer of 2020 on ways for Shaker to obtain more LEED credits. Below is a link to an article about our past work:
Our group's work has always centered around the LEED for Cities requirements:
In the Spring of 2021, we created the Shaker EcoChallenge as a way to involve Shaker residents in the pursuit of a greener city. In doing so, we partnered with local businesses to provide prizes and advertised to local schools and organizations.
Last autumn, our team got together and analyzed the effects of the Horseshoe Lake Dam removal. In doing so, we created a public survey amassing over 90 total responses from a wide range of respondents, whose feedback was then used in a presentation to the Sustainability Council.

Continuing on our efforts in 2021, we expanded the Shaker EcoChallenge in 2022 and got an even larger support network to back our work. We even got a shoutout from the mayor himself!
