Interim benchmark assessments support educators in ways that lagging indicators, such as Missouri Assessment Program test scores, cannot—while other qualitative and contextual measures help tell the full story of our district’s progress and successes. These benchmarks inform teachers about student growth and achievement in real-time, allowing educators to modify instruction for students immediately.
Our database includes metrics for academic readiness and growth for grades 3-8 in English Language Arts and Mathematics. Interim assessments are used in grades 3-8 for English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics. Use the following dashboard to learn more about how students progress in ELA and Mathematics by filtering to NWEA as the assessment for the 2024-2025 school year. The Hazelwood School District has moved from NWEA to i-Ready for the 2025-2026 school year.
End-of-course assessments are taken when a student has received instruction on the Missouri Learning Standards for an assessment, regardless of grade level. All EOC assessments are available only online unless accommodations are provided to meet the student's best needs. The end-of-course assessment scores below include English II, Algebra I, Biology, and Government.
In Algebra I, 54.7% of our high school students are scoring within the proficiency ranges
In Biology, 69.4% of our high school students are scoring within the proficiency ranges
In English II, 86% of our high school students are scoring within the proficiency ranges
In Government, 93.1% of our high school students are scoring within the proficiency ranges

What is ACCESS?
ACCESS for English Language Learners (ELLs) is a federally mandated English language proficiency assessment administered annually to all K–12 English Learners (ELs). It measures students' skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English. Results from the test help educators determine language support needs, monitor growth, and inform exit from EL services.
Quick Facts About Our EL Program:
The Hazelwood School District serves over 500 English Learners from over 25 different language backgrounds and 50+ countries across all schools in the district.
The top five languages spoken by Hazelwood School District EL students are: Spanish, Arabic, Swahili, Vietnamese, and French.
Our EL population makes up approximately 4% of total district enrollment.
Each EL student has an Individualized Language Plan (ILP) to support academic and language development.
2024 ACCESS Testing Data (District-Wide Highlights):
Overall Participation Rate: 99% of eligible EL students completed the assessment
66.4% of EL students showed positive growth in overall proficiency
8.2% of EL students scored Proficient (4.7+) and became eligible for exit
38 students successfully exited from the EL Program in 2024 and transitioned to monitored status
Beginning in 2022, the state of Missouri required all students entering kindergarten be assessed on kindergarten readiness. Students are assessed on twenty standards across five domains.
Since the District began monitoring kindergarten readiness, students who have attended Hazelwood Early Childhood programming have consistently out performed students who have not accessed Hazelwood Early Childhood education prior to kindergarten.
Hazelwood Early Childhood programming consists of Pre-K classrooms in all of our 19 elementary schools as well as three Early Childhood Special Education centers. Enrollment across the district has increased over 40% since the 2021-2022 school year.
Number of Pre-K Students
May 2025: 994
May 2024: 926
May 2023: 844
May 2022: 697
Essential Learner Outcomes (ELOs) are benchmark assessments designed to support student growth and instructional planning. These assessments are administered six times throughout the school year from September to March, in English Language Arts (ELA), mathematics, and science.
Each ELO is developed using three years of Item Analysis Reports (IARs) from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). These reports are used to identify how frequently each Missouri Learning Standard is assessed on the state-level MAP (Missouri Assessment Program) test, ensuring that ELOs align with state priorities.
To measure student progress over time, the same assessment is given twice during the year in three cycles:
Cycle 1: September and January
Cycle 2: October and February
Cycle 3: November and March
While there are six total assessment windows, each subject and grade level has three unique ELO assessments, each administered twice. This structure provides:
Six data points per student
Three pre and post-assessment cycles
Targeted insights into key Missouri Learning Standards
ELOs help teachers make informed instructional decisions and support students in setting and tracking academic goals. In 2024–2025, ELOs were implemented in grades 3–8.
At the high school level, students enrolled in courses with a Missouri End-of-Course (EOC) assessment participate in three benchmark assessments throughout the year: Fall, Winter, and Spring.
These benchmark assessments are specifically designed to measure student understanding of key Missouri Learning Standards and help monitor progress toward EOC readiness.
Courses with benchmark assessments include:
Algebra I
English I
English II
Biology
Government
These assessments provide valuable data to guide instruction, support student growth, and prepare students for success on their EOC exams.
