On January 19, 2026 there is no school because of MLK Day! MLK was an American Civil Rights Activitist. He used nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience against Jim Crow laws and other forms of legalized discrimination, which most commonly affected African Americans. He was assassinated in 1968 after giving a speech supporting a sanitation workers' strike. He is best known for his speech, I Have a Dream, found below. In 1983, President Ronald Reagan created a federal holiday honoring King's legacy. In 2000, this holiday would officially be observed in all 50 states. (Jackson)

Lohri is the traditonal Punjabi winter harvest festival. It takes place around january 13th to mark the start of the sugar cane harvest. It symbolizes new beginings and prosparity. Traditions include bonfires, music, and sweets.

Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday to remember the Maccabees, a small group of Jewish fighters, defeated the Seleucid Greeks who had desecrated the Temple in Jerusalem. They cleansed and rededicated the Temple, but found only one small jar of pure oil for the Temple's lamp. They celebrate by lighting a Menorah, one more candle each night, and by playing dreidel, a spinning top game.

Thanksgiving is going to happen on Thursday, November 27th this year! In the USA, Thanksgiving always happens on the fourth Thursday of November. Thanksgiving is a time to feast and give thanks for everyone and everything that you're thankful for, whether that be your dog or food or a flashlight! For MSN, Thanksgiving break starts on Wednesday, November 26th. Be thankful for the break from school!
Thanksgiving's origins come from a feast in 1621 between the Plymouth pilgrims and the Wampanoag people, which most people don't know about. However, the first sign of Thanksgiving tradition comes later in 1789, with George Washington's Thanksgiving proclamation, and later in 1863, Abraham Lincoln declared it a holiday.

Many countries celebrate Thanksgiving, such as the USA, Canada, China, Japan, and the United Kingdom, just to name a few. Countries celebrate Thanksgiving in significantly different ways! For example, the US likes to serve turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, and stuffing, while Japan likes to serve fish, chicken, and tofu for vegetarians.

Fun Facts About Thanksgiving
Canada celebrates Thanksgiving on the second Monday of October rather than the fourth Thursday of November like we do!
Canada's first Thanksgiving was actually before the believed First Thanksgiving between Plymouth and Wampanoag - by more than 40 years!
The First Thanksgiving, credited to Plymouth, was shared with Wampanoag for helping them survive the harsh winter! So that means the Plymouth pilgrims couldn't even have held the First Thanksgiving if not for the Wampanoag people, who go largely uncredited for this.
The First Thanksgiving likely did not serve turkey! Thanksgiving primarily had turkey after Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a holiday in 1863.
The United States Penny Could come out of Circulation Soon

On November 12, the US Mint announced that, after 232 years, it had produced the country’s final penny. The Mint says it costs too much to make the coins and that few people actually use them anymore. It’s still fine to use pennies to buy things in the US. But the Mint will no longer be making more of them. If they do come out circulation it could make items harder to buy, but the stop in manufacture has saved the US 56 billion dollars annually. Still they are the most common coin currently by far.
