The Tucano Gold mine is located in Amapá State in northern Brazil. It is approximately 200 kilometers from the state capital. It was once a heap leaching operation that ran from late 2005 to January 2009, producing approximately 292,000 ounces of gold from 8.8 Mt of gold ore. The Gold mine has since had many additions to the facilities in 2012, 2018, and 2019. The Tucano is entirely owned by Great Panther Mining Limited.
In 2012, a new processing plant was installed. The new flowsheet is comprised of a primary crusher, SAG mill and six CIL tanks which were able to process up to 30% of sulphide ore. In 2018, the processing plant capacity was expanded with the addition of a new ball mill, a thickener, an additional CIL tank and a new gas oxygen plant. In 2019, a new liquid oxygen plant was installed. The plant modifications in 2018 and 2019 allow Tucano to process up to 90% of sulfide ore with gold recoveries above 90%.
on average according to Great Panther, they mine around 2.4 - 3.3 million tons of gold ore per year and are able to recover around 122k-145k ounces of gold.
one of the scopes of Great Panthers mining facility is managing the environmental impact statement review studies and metallurgical testwork conducted by consultants appointed by the client. Ausenco continued its association with Tucano by successfully delivering design, procurement, and construction management for the new gold ore processing facility in 2012.
The main challenge Ausenco encountered was to adapt a previously designed gold processing plant to suit the requirements of the Tucano project. Utilizing the existing design, their dedicated gold processing team achieved a significant cost saving for the client.
