All contest rules are liable to change at any time.
Note: we are currently in the process of updating some rules to reflect a new prize system. Expect changes to the prize mechanisms at any time. Thank you for your patience as we finalize a new and exciting proposal.
Each week of problems is considered a series. Except on special occasions, problems will only be released on school days. A week begins and ends on Sunday at 12:00 AM EST/EDT. Prizes are given by series, not by problem.
All problems are original and require work to develop. Problem authors solve the problem themselves and verify the solution with each other before the problem is released. Each problem is categorized as easy, medium, or hard difficulty depending on the opinion of the problem author.
We do our best to release each problem before 7:30 AM EST/EDT, but there are no guarantees. We reserve the right to cancel prizes for problems that are released ahead of time ("leaked") for any reason.
All problems are copyright their respective authors. You may not distribute any problem in any form whatsoever without express written permission from both the problem authors and the contest organizers. Non-commercial, educational use is excluded from this restriction, provided that proper attribution is provided to all problem authors and contributors and it is clearly identified that the problem originated from the "Adithya Kalyanam Mathematical Problem-of-the-Day Competition."
This contest is open to all current Hawken School students only. You may need to log in to your school Google account to make submissions. There is no participation fee of any kind for this contest.
We encourage you to come up with a full solution. To avoid subjectivity, however, any correct answer submitted through the official form will be accepted.
To prevent completely random guessing, each person may submit up to 8 official attempts per easy problem, 12 official attempts per medium problem, and 16 official attempts per hard problem.
Unless otherwise stated, attempts submitted for any problem in a series more than one week after the series will not are not eligible for points or prizes. In other words, you have all of the following week to make prize-eligible submissions for one week's problems.
Each problem will be worth a certain number of points. You will always receive points for a correct submission received before the deadline, but you will receive significantly more points for answering the problem before others. Each point is an equal share in the prize for the week. Unless told otherwise, each part of a multiple-part problem will provide an equal number of points.
A fixed prize will be set for each problem series (i.e., each week). The value of the total prize is determined by availability of internal math club funds and may vary between each series. This prize will be allocated proportionately based on the number of points earned for problems in that series.
Prizes are limited by applicable school policy. Prizes are not guaranteed. We reserve the right to indefinitely withhold any undelivered prize for any or no reason. By participating in this contest, you waive your right to sue for the prize in any legal or academic capacity.
The prize will be delivered to the winner of the contest either in-person or digitally as appropriate. We will attempt to contact the winner via the email associated with the Google account associated with the submission. Should the submitter's name differ from this email, we will first attempt to give the prize to the name, then the email.
Participants are free to do with their prize as they choose upon delivery. It is theirs to keep.
You may freely consult other Hawken students or the internet. You may not consult anyone else, including Hawken math teachers and Hawken alumni. We reserve the right to withhold prizes from winners who obtain their answer illegitimately.
We will not publicly release any answer or solutions in any form until a . We will only check to see if your answer is correct.
We will not publicly release the answer or solutions immediately after the winning submission is received. This gives time for people who have not had a chance to attempt the problem to do so. If the problem has already been solved, you may ask for a hint. We will also give you the answer or our solution if asked, but we strongly encourage you to attempt the problem yourself first. While we will make a good effort to provide full solutions promptly, we cannot make any guarantees.
We may publicly release the answer and/or one or more solutions after a substantial amount has passed on a problem at our own discretion.
If you find an error at any time, please let us know about it right away.
