Project Brainstorming - Three Needs

THE BRAINSTORMING PROCESS:

Each team member identified 20 problems and 2 potential feasible solutions to them that would involve mechanical engineering.
Team members brought their 5 best ideas (for 20 total ideas) to discuss with the team.
Team narrowed down the 20 best ideas mentioned above to 3 ideas that were worth pursuing further in the class.
Developed functional requirements that all solutions to the problem must have (i.e. waterproof, wireless, low cost, etc.).
For each of the 3 ideas, the team came up with as many solutions as possible (even less practical ones).
From there, the team narrowed down the solutions to the best few, which were then presented to the class.
After the presentation, 2 ideas were chosen to continue to pursue in the class by doing an in-depth analysis of their physical, economic, and engineering feasibility to prove, on paper, that these solutions could be accomplished during this class.

Automatic Snow Plow

Living in Chicago, the above image is, unfortunately, all too familiar to us, and removing all that snow is a dreadful task. In an ideal world, with unlimited time and energy, we would all go out there during a snow storm every 1-2 hours to clear snow as it accumulates, preventing the snowdrifts from reaching this point. To solve this issue, we plan to use such a strategy to make an automated snowplow.

Automatic Toilet Bowl Cleaner

Cleaning a toilet is gross, and nobody looks forward to doing it. This solution is centered around automating the toilet cleaning process, allowing for it to happen more frequently and worry-free.

Automatic Pool Chemical Tester

Many people are turned off from owning a pool because of the daily maintenance (testing the water, filtering debris, adding chemicals, etc.). We strive to solve one of these problems by automating the pool water testing process, allowing for constant regulation, which saves time for the user as well as money since the pool chemicals can be corrected right as they start to drop, rather than waiting until the user has time to test again.
