In this activity a group leader will guide participants through expressing their mood as a quick check in before playing a Rec Room minigame. This activity uses in-game props to help participants express themselves. Social and emotional learning occurs naturally when socializing with a group but it can be more effective when a leader guides participants to reflect on their experiences.
Rec Room is a free social app that works on a wide range of devices including phones, game consoles, PCs, and VR headsets. Users can interact through virtual avatars in a 3-D environment that features games and social spaces. Rec Room includes the ability to create your own objects, environments, and even interactive games within the app. Experiencing Rec Room in VR mode would require using a compatible VR system, such as the $300 Oculus Quest 2.

Create a private room with a variety of prop items. You can use our sample room ^SEL.Lab by opening the Rec Room play menu and entering the room code “xrlbzck6.”
Invite your group to a private room and gather them around you.
Ask everyone in the group to pick up an item that represents how they are feeling right now.
Ask each participant to throw you their item and explain why they picked it.
If anyone is feeling the same way as someone else, they can say “Me too” and raise their hand. You can throw them the item and let them speak as well.
After everyone has completed the check in, take the group to play one of the multiplayer games available in Rec Room. You can find information about many games within Rec Room using the Rec Room Wiki.
When the game is done, return to the private room and repeat steps 2 to 4.
Discuss how everyone’s mood has changed from the first check in to the second check in.
"Rec Room was fun. But it was kind of buggy."
"I've played 700 hours of this game in less than a year. That's more than any other single game I own on Steam... I've met so many wonderful people through this game, and now have a close group of VR friends from across the world."
