A virtual space is a simulated digital environment. Virtual spaces allow users to interact with the environment and may facilitate interaction with other users. Schools have begun to see how virtual spaces can aid in self-directed learning, increase opportunities for social engagement, and decrease isolation.

SEL stands for Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), which describes teaching students to understand social interactions and emotions in order to manage one's self, relationships, and make responsible and caring choices. In the workforce, we often refer to these as “soft skills," but more than that, SEL is an essential part of human development. Research shows that SEL makes a positive difference in many aspects of life, including improved academic performance, economic success, and overall well-being.
Each SEL activity on Virtual Social will encompass one or more topics from the SEL wheel. To learn more about the five SEL competencies visit casel.org.
After spending over a year learning at home, students need support in managing emotions, behaviors, and relationships as they return to in-person learning. Providing SEL in virtual spaces addresses the need for a flexible, personalized, whole-child learning approach. Research shows that using immersive platforms and a game based approach can foster engagement, give students a sense of community, cultivate empathy, increase student motivation, and provide greater flexibility as teachers strive to deliver customized learning experiences in unpredictable times.
The goal of this website is to provide K-12 teachers with a sampling of creative ways to promote SEL in virtual spaces, but there are many more to choose from. More familiar methods range from check-in strategies using Google Classroom to collaborative activities using Google Slides or Google Jamboard to Digital Escape Rooms. More complex platforms include collaborative spaces such as Gather.Town and immersive activities using VR headsets.
