Historically the Pauoa ahupua’a has gone through vast land development from commercial to residential usages. Since theses developments dating back to the later 19th century the Pauoa Stream changed along with it. This change resulted in mass channeling of the stream which dictated Auwaiolimu’s path. The stream was redirected underground in Chinatown to converge with the Nu’uanu stream. Pauoa Stream and the Nu’uanu stream were not the only streams to be subjected to channelization. 70 streams on the island of Oahu have been channelized effecting around 100 more streams. The effects of cemet being used for channeling Pauoa Stream has introduced harmful bacteria making the water unsafe, bacteria growing through the pores of concrete.
