What is your role in NREM?
I am the instructor that teaches NREM 192, NREM 203, NREM 251, and NREM 492 during the Spring. I also teach NREM 665 and have assisted with the MEM capstone courses.
What do you like about NREM?
I am delighted to be part of the NREM ʻohana (students, staff, and faculty). We are an amazing hui! As an NREM Instructor, I enjoy teaching students, being a mentor, and working alongside my teaching assistants. What the world needs right now is our NREM students. Every single one of them! I'm here to help them become what the world needs.
What was your best Halloween costume?
I am always a witch. It's natural.
Fun fact about yourself?
I've been a vegetarian since I was three years old. Apparently there was a traumatic experience that occurred in Chinatown (Honolulu, Hawaiʻi) and specifically with chicken feet!
What is your role in NREM?
I am a first-year graduate student in the MEM program. My advisor is Dr. Tomoaki Miura. At the moment I'm not working on a project, but I'm interested in invasive species and their effects on native ecosystems.
What do you like about NREM?
Meeting people from various backgrounds within NREM and hearing input about how we can better "manage" the environment. The fact that everyone in the program has different experiences and perspectives allows for such intensely thought-provoking conversations!
What was your best Halloween costume?
I haven't dressed up for Halloween in a long time, but my best costume was probably a train costume I made back in elementary school.
Fun fact about yourself ?
I fell into NREM by chance. When I was applying to UHM as an undergraduate, I only picked NREM because they had a Bachelor's, Master's, and Ph.D. program when I was looking at the various majors offered. I ended up loving it!
Where are you in that cool photo?
Osaka, Japan.
What is your role in NREM?
Process hiring paperwork for our fabulous GA's, TA's, Casual hires, Lecturers, student assistants (all personnel actions); building coordinator for the HVAC work; telecom coordinator; key coordinator and other duties.
What do you like about NREM?
I get to meet all the new incoming GA's, TA's and get to know the current GA's a little better. I get to see some faculty members that I used to work with in St. John. The work keeps me super busy and the day goes by too fast. It seems like I don't have enough time during the work day to complete all my duties.
What was your best Halloween costume?
LOL...you have to ask my parents! I like to pass out candy to the children...the naughty ones get raisins!
Fun fact about yourself?
I like to do artsy fartsy stuff when time permits.
Elaine Viska walked us through how to make bags, baskets, and planters using locally available natural materials. What crafting skills we have in NREM!
You can find Elaine's handy-dandy instructions for how to weave your own coconut bag here.

If you are registered to vote in Hawaiʻi and haven't mailed in your Hawaii ballot by Tuesday, October 27th, you can drop off your ballot or vote in person at a voting service center (see interactive map to the right) by Tuesday, November 3rd. While the presidential election gets the most airtime on national news, wherever you may be registered to vote, it's also important to vote in races for local and state candidates. You can find Hawaiʻi vote-by-mail resources here.
