Planting Monkeypod and Milo Trees
Increasing green space in the park and celebrating Climate Ready O'ahu.
Our trees were planted on February 29, 2024 just after Honolulu City Council unanimously passed Resolution 24-16.

On February 24, 2024 we hosted a plant swap where dozens of green-thumbed gardeners shared their plants and passion for taking care of them. Thanks for sharing all your beautiful stories and greenery with us!

Throughout the summer of 2023, our partners collaborated with PACT to delve into the dynamics of youth engagement with the park. Even now, they remain, enjoying basketball and engaging in conversations with friends.

Back to School Event
Back to School Event
Engaging in partnerships with local non-profits to offer community resources and prepare students for the upcoming school year.
Back to School giveaway was hosted on August 4, 2023, to provide free school supplies. Booths from Mc McDonald, Council member Radiant Cordero, Hawai‘i Bicycling League, YesProject, and The National Park Service Pearl Harbor.
An art walk display showcasing kids' visions for the park, featuring ideas for a new playground, basketball court, tree planting, and other facilities.
The Hawaiʻi Bicycling League, through The BikeEd Program, hosted a keiki bike rodeo focused on imparting bike safety education. The event included a dynamic bike obstacle course and riding session, providing a fun and interactive experience for keiki to engage with the park.
The Back to School Event served as a pivotal moment to unite the community in a shared space. We aim to organize more events like these at Makalapa Neighborhood Park, fostering community engagement and connection.
Walking Audit from Makalapa Neighborhood Park
Walking Audit from Makalapa Neighborhood Park
A walking audit took place on November 20, 2023. This was done because Aiea Elementary School recently went from 3 school buses down to 1 bus. With fewer buses available, some students are now faced with walking to school. That has had a negative impact on attendance. Our goal is to find a safer route to take from the area to the school.
The current route was established by Safe Route to School. Current obstacles were seen and the report is pending to be published.
Navigating a bustling intersection poses challenges, with current barriers hindering the walkway's accessibility. The pathway is unclear, causing uncertainty for parents and pedestrians alike.
Initiating park connectivity marks the potential beginning of a safe path for kids heading to school, creating additional green space, and enhancing accessibility to the park.
