Week 16 - Evaluation Essay

Introduction

This week, you will complete your evaluation essay exam.

Learning Objectives

After successfully completing the evaluation essay lessons, you should be able to:

    • describe the purpose, basic components, characteristics, and structure of an evaluation essay

    • demonstrate writing techniques of an evaluation essay

Evaluation Essay: Getting Started

In the previous modules, getting started with your essay entailed writing a draft or an outline. These were then submitted and you received feedback from instructor and/or peers.

In the case of the evaluation essay, which is a timed essay exam, you will not have the benefit of any feedback. Instead, you will be given instructions on what to write, and three hours later, you will need to have completed your essay. This type of exam, a timed-writing exam, can often cause apprehension.

To better understand how to approach this assignment, and thus allay any fears, please read Purdue OWL's handout on essay exams.

Once you have read that, review the grading rubric for the essay exam.

Now that you have a clearer idea of how how to write an Evaluation & Essay as well as how to take an essay exam, it's time to complete the Evaluation Essay Exam. Details are in the "Activities" section below.

Activities

These are the activities that you need to complete this week. All activities are due by 11:55 p.m. on their due dates.

  • Evaluation Essay Exam.

    • About the exam:

      • You will have three hours to complete the exam. You can take it at any time during the dates listed on the left.

      • Once you begin the exam, the timer will start, and so you will need to make sure that you have three hours of uninterrupted time to devote to this exam, particularly since you have only one attempt. The key to a successful exam is time management.

      • For this exam, you will write a 1000-word essay based on your evaluation of an article. The exam instructions in Laulima > Quizzes & Exam will tell you how to get this article.

      • Review the instructions that are part of the exam. Be sure that you are clear about your task.

      • Carefully read the essay that you must evaluate.

      • Finally, begin to write your essay. Begin by writing your thesis (which is your judgment of the idea in the article). Develop reasons to support your thesis. Then, refer to your notes that you wrote on the essay and use them to make your support for each reason very credible. Having very good support is a way to show your credibility.
