Aloha ʻāina, like a powerful magnet, constantly pulls a person back to their homeland, beloved community, and native language. The Kūkulu Kumuhana Project focuses on strengthening the reading skills and aloha ʻāina insights of children in grades K-3. These project goals were achieved through four developoment strategies: (1) book development, (2) curriculum development, (3) teacher support, (4) family support.
Queen Liliʻokalani composed the following in her mele Ke Aloha ʻĀina: “Pūʻili mai a paʻa i loko ke aloha i ka ʻāina, maliu i ka mea mana, a e ola nō ka lāhui! He aloha lā, he aloha, no kuʻu lāhui ʻōiwi, i hoʻokahi puʻuwai, kūpaʻa me ka lōkahi!” (Embrace within aloha for this land, heed the divine, and the people will flourish! This is aloha, aloha for my native lāhui, one in heart, steadfast in harmony!) Such was the powerful aloha ʻāina that guided the project development team. Aloha for the Hawaiian language, aloha for the people, aloha for the community, steadfast aloha intent on supporting a vibrant lāhui.
