The logo for the Kukulu Kumuhana project is an ahu of expertly stacked rocks. This symbolizes the kahua or foundation on which the project team built (kukulu). Dots in the pohaku or rocks represent piko with their multi-layered meanings. A fern leaf and shoot on either side of the ahu represent the fragrance of traditional Hawaiian knowledge and the potential for creativity and fruition.

Curriculum Development

Grade K-3 kaiapuni teachers collaborated in developing instructional units for the books of the Place-based Knowledge Set. In these units, reading skills and important lessons related to the themes and content of the books are taught. This teacher-developed curriculum was supported by the staff of the Hale Kuamoʻo who created assessment tools and lesson worksheets to further build out the curriculum units.


Curricula and resources for the Career Awareness Set were developed by the teachers enrolled in the for-credit university course (KED 494: Curriculum Development) with Kumu Kananinohea Mākaʻimoku during the summer of 2021
