Safety Activity:
Scavenger Hunt. Instructor will conduct a kitchen tour of the kitchen. Going through specific areas, names & where you can find certain tools/equipment. Students joining advanced culinary will be working in a new kitchen classroom. The goal of the activity is to see how well students pay attention to detail. After the tour students will play a scavenger hunting game. Students will be paired in groups of 4-5 and be given a list of kitchen tools to grab. We’ll be playing a relay race, each student will grab 1 tool, followed by the next person to grab their assigned tool.Â
Learning Target:Â

I think making a routine that encompasses safety is the best way to have students practice safety. Safety should be things that somewhat come automatic so that you always maintain a safe environment so by making a routine it can help students not have to always think about how safe they are.

Glove removal labÂ
Students first learn the various PPE used in the classroom, along with infection control/ transmission precautions. Then we go over the proper order of donning and doffing all healthcare PPE. The last activity is the glove removal lab. If students splash, splatter, or get paint on their hands, they fail the lab and need to retry. I use red paint (blood) or brown (stool) paint to give students a “real-life” experience. I also let them know proper glove removal is an important life skill. No matter their future career, they never know when they might need to clean up someone else’s body fluidsÂ

Safety Activity Suggestions and Resources:
Safety is everywhere and must be a priority when working to create and bring students’ ideas to market. We can reduce business risks by ensuring that our students receive proper training when using equipment and machinery in their production process.Â

Safety Activity Suggestions and Resources:
Focus on Creative Freedom and have a support network for students (i.e. prototype/test/feedback)
Use guided feedback to prompt the students into creating supportive, positive feedback. (i.e. I like, I think, I wish, what if…)
Peer to Peer mentoring
Collaborative projects and activities
Empathy building activities (i.e. getting to know you, tell me a story … )
Classroom Safety Inspection w/ checklist
Classroom Safety design activityÂ
Brainstorming Norms (i.e. Quantity over quality, go for wild & crazy ideas, build on each other’s ideas)
Anything else you might want to share
In my classroom, physical safety is a top priority. However, because there is a very minimal safety risk, our focus is always on creating a safe and supportive environment where students can feel emotionally and psychologically safe while expressing their ideas and opinions. It is very important that students feel safe to take creative risks and try to innovate. In order to achieve this, students need to know they won’t be judged harshly or negatively and that their ideas always have value. Ideation and Iteration are extremely important in expressing the importance of failure in learning and growth, rather than the fear of failure. The mindset shift from fear of failure to embracing it is so critical.
