Please make sure you're registered for 15-16 credits for fall
Exploratory Business (EXB/pre-business) students are NOT REQUIRED to make an appointment to register THIS FIRST TIME* (for Fall 2022). (DAP students must meet with Shauna, see the bottom of the page, before registering)
If you feel confident after reading the materials, you may go ahead and register on May 27. It is usually not possible to meet with every entering student before registration, but you should still register on May 27 even if you haven't met with an advisor yet (you can meet with an advisor during the summer and we can make adjustments, if necessary!)
Exceptions: Some students in special programs ( (1) student athletes, (2) Honors students, or (3) students receiving assistance from the KOKUA program, etc.) might be required to meet with their advisor in that field before registering.
Many students have more than one advisor in their time at UHM!
Until you are officially admitted to the business program (after completion of 60 credits and the pre-business core requirements) your advising would mainly meet with advisors from Manoa Advising Center (MAC) (or Mark if itʻs more specific to pre-business core requirements):
Manoa Advising Center: https://manoa.hawaii.edu/undergrad/mac/about-mac/scheduling/
You might also benefit from doing their online workshop on advising: https://manoa.hawaii.edu/undergrad/advising/summer/online/
Mark (for pre-business-core-focused questions): https://shidler.hawaii.edu/undergraduate/advising/prospective
Appointment times will all be in Hawaii time.
In general, appointments are only listed 7 days in advance at a time for most advising offices, so (especially during busy times) it is possible appointments for a week may fill up, and you may have to wait for appointments for the next week to start opening up.
Are there times when you might need to meet with an Advisor at MAC vs Mark?
There may be some times when Exploratory Business students are required to meet with a Manoa Advising Center Advisor (you would be notified by email)---this is often for a semesterly requirement called "Mandatory Advising." At other times, you may have a choice.
If you are not sure about your major and are considering multiple major options, Manoa Advising Center advisors have more experience in working with "pre-"/potential majors from many parts of the university, so they may be better prepared to talk with you about exploring multiple options other than business.
If you are deciding between business and another major, it may also be useful to talk to an advisor for that other major for advice on structuring your coursework (i.e., neither MAC nor Mark)
After you are admitted to Shidler, you would be assigned a Shidler advisor!
You should schedule appointments directly with Shauna: https://www.star.hawaii.edu/appointment/login.jsp?groupId=202
*However, after starting at Manoa in the fall, all students will be required to do "Mandatory Advising" each semester for at least their first two years:
DAP students must meet with Shauna each semester before registration to get permission to register for the following semester
Exploratory Business students must meet with an advisor in the Manoa Advising Center or with Mark each semester before being allowed to register for the next semester for the first two years (see below)
Appointment timing in the future
In Fall semesters: Registration for spring semesters is in November, so you should make appointments in late September, October, and early November to discuss your current progress and the upcoming semester
In Spring semesters: Registration for the following fall is in April, so you should make appointments starting in mid-February, March, and early April to discuss your current progress and the upcoming semester
Anytime: The above is just timing for registration/coursework-related discussions. Appointments can be made most any time of year to discuss long-term planning, study abroad, majors, minors, difficulty in classes, where to go for information on most topics on campus, etc.
