Empowering children to become responsible citizens and stewards of their natural world
A healthy beach is a dynamic environment, where dunes and the ocean exist in harmony. One of the healthiest relationships in nature unfolds in a “sand dance”—a rhythm of sharing and balance, where sediment moves from the ocean, across the beach, to the dunes and back again. This natural exchange depends on their needs, dynamics, climate, wave energy, and seasons. Much like any other relationship, a healthy beach can only thrive through balance, sharing, kindness and care. Beaches teach us that in the welfare of others, we find our own well-being.
My love for beaches led me to become a coastal Geologist. While studying sand dunes and beaches along the coasts of Brazil and Australia, I gained more than scientific knowledge. These places taught me profound life lessons and helped shape the person I am today. The idea of “The Sand Dance” was born from being a dancer, and from the loving relationships I cherish — especially my friendship with Kammie — and it was inspired by a game we created together for children at Kaʻaʻawa Elementary school.
The Sand Dance is rooted in our experiences with coastal environments, early childhood education, dancing, and a shared passion and commitment to protect beaches for future generations. Our beaches are a vital part of our lives and belong to our children—both present and future.
May this story touch your heart, remind you that no storm lasts forever, inspire you to nurture healthy relationships, find balance, and encourage you to preserve our environment while caring for one another.
With aloha to every child in the world,
Helena
