East-West Center Opportunities

"East-West Center Experience"

The East-West Center’s student programs, carried out in cooperation with the University of Hawai‘i (UH), are designed to develop the leadership skills and regional literacy needed to meet the evolving demands and interdependency of global change. The pursuit of graduate study in specific fields is enhanced through activities that promote understanding and problem solving across disciplinary, cultural and national boundaries. The EWC’s unique approach is its focus on community building at the campus level as a stepping-stone to community building at the regional level.

Admitted Law Students typically apply to the following programs at the East-West Center to support their educational goals as well as to help with the costs of attending Law School.

  1. Graduate Degree Fellowship (GDF) - Deadline: Dec. 1.

This is the flagship EWC scholarship for students from Asia, the Pacific and the United States with a focus on community building and leading positive change in the Asia Pacific region. It covers two years of tuition, fees, housing at EWC, insurance, book allowance and a modest stipend toward Master’s or PhD study in any field. Approximately 16 GDF scholarships each year, half for Americans and half for Asia Pacific students, plus 12-15 EWC Foundation Scholarships for outstanding GDF semi-finalists. Questions? Contact Steven Bell, GDF Coordinator, bells@eastwestcenter.org

EWC Alumni and Foundation Scholarships: Through the generosity of the Center's friends and alumni, supplementary scholarships have been established to assist East-West Center students. The Center may be able to make available a limited amount of supplemental scholarship support to GDF finalists with financial need on a case-by-case basis.

Some of these awards may also be made to semifinalists in the GDF competition who did not receive a GDF. Recipients of these scholarships are required to live in EWC housing and to participate in the EWC community. The average amount of the scholarship is $9,000, which a student can use to pay for housing, tuition, books or living expenses. Foundation scholarship recipients are responsible for paying for tuition (at the discounted resident rate for EWC scholarship recipients), all housing costs and living expenses. Questions? Contact Kanika Mak-Lavy, Foundation Scholarships Coordinator, maklavyk@eastwestcenter.org
