Here you will find information about the various jobs you can do for the Chemistry Department! Clicking on the links below will take you to the section on that type of job.
General job descriptions can be found on Workday. Information on how to apply for specific jobs, however, is best found below.
For any of the jobs in the drop downs below, having taken the associated class is the only requirement to be eligible for the job. For many of these jobs, professors email all eligible students asking for people who are interested. If there's something you want to do, however, don't wait for that email! Go ahead and email the professor teaching the course and let them know you're interested. If you don't know who the right professor to contact is, ask any chemistry professor and they can point you in the right direction. It's best to email at the beginning of the summer (for the fall semester) and in December (for the spring semester). If you don't hear back in 1-2 weeks, follow up! Professors can be busy and miss emails.
The professors for most courses change every year, but Kelly Matz (kelly.matz@gmail.com) and Alberto Lopez (alopez6@haverford.edu) are permanent instructors for 111/112 and 222/225 labs, respectively.
Jobs include:
Chemistry Question Center (CQC) TAs:
Job description: CQC is run by TAs and normally has 3-4 sessions a week (though you wouldn’t work all of them). CQC helps students taking Gen Chem and Orgo with problem sets and other questions they might have about class concepts. You can be a Gen Chem CQC TA, an Orgo CQC TA, or both! Weekly time commitment ranges from 2-4 hours.
Some classes also request that a TA is present in class for active learning activities to walk around and answer questions.
Fall/Spring: CQC TAs are typically responsible for helping with Gen Chem (111/112/113/114), Orgo (222/225), P-chem/Quantum (304/305).
Graders:
Job description: Graders grade problem sets for the class. Time commitment ranges from 2-6 hours, depending on the number of students taking the class and the number of graders.
Fall/Spring: CQC TAs are typically responsible for helping with Gen Chem (111/112/113/114), Orgo (222/225), P-chem/Quantum (304/305).
Lab TAs:
Job description: Lab TAs help out with running (bi)weekly lab sections, hold a weekly office hour, and assist in grading lab assignments/notebooks. Weekly time commitment ranges from 4-7 hours, depending on the week and class. TAs for orgo and superlab typically work more hours than TAs for gen chem.
Fall Semester: 111/113 (Gen Chem), 115 (Inquiry Lab), 222 (Orgo), 301 (Chem Superlab), 303 (Biochem Superlab)
Spring Semester: 112/114 (Gen Chem), 225 (Orgo), 302 (Chem Superlab), 303 (Biochem Superlab)
For Chemistry, you can be a peer tutor for CHEM 111, 112, 113, 114, 115, 222, 225, and higher-level courses if needed. You don't have to pick just one class! The only requirement for being eligible is that you have demonstrated mastery of the course content. This typically looks like successful completion of the course.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Priority deadlines are typically in August for the fall semester and December for the spring semester.
Peer tutoring is highly flexible; you can select the hours that you want to tutor, with no minimum and a maximum of 20 total hours of work per week. One tutoring session is an hour, plus 15 minutes of prep time. Tutors also go engage in weekly training with Gabriel Angrand (gangrand@haverford.edu) and/or the head tutors and student training facilitators.

"Certain Chemistry faculty members may employ students as hourly, work-study research assistants in the laboratory during the academic year: this can be helpful if a student is interested in earning supplemental income or in turning a work-study commitment into research laboratory time."
