Our Agriculture and Horticulture Department offers a range of practical, hands-on courses that give students a real taste of life in New Zealand’s Primary Industries. Whether you're passionate about plants, animals, food production, or sustainability, this department provides a welcoming and engaging environment to learn and grow.
Students will find a unique opportunity here to experience farm life in Aotearoa. Learning takes place both in the classroom and out on Hayward Farm, our on-site working farm, as well as in our dedicated horticulture area. Students are involved in real-world projects, designing and building gardens, propagating plants, caring for animals, using small machinery, and learning how to manage pests, diseases, and soil health.
Our courses explore how food and fibre are produced in New Zealand and take students through the science behind plant and animal growth. You’ll gain skills in fencing, livestock handling, pruning, and even chainsaw operation—valuable skills for everyday life and future work. We also offer the chance to earn a Level 3 Primary ITO Trades Certificate, an industry-recognised qualification that can lead to employment or further study in agriculture, horticulture, forestry, or aquaculture.
For students who enjoy learning by doing, want to explore the New Zealand countryside, and are curious about how sustainable farming works, this department offers a truly immersive experience. It’s a great way to connect with local students, work on meaningful projects, and take home skills you can use anywhere in the world.
