At Year 9, all students experience a rich and varied curriculum designed to build a strong foundation across key learning areas. Core subjects include English, Mathematics, Humanities, Science, and Physical Education. In addition, students explore a wide range of option subjects each term, including:
Technologies: Food, Wood, Metal, Graphics, and Digital Technology
The Arts: Visual Art, Music, Drama, Dance, and Media
Languages: Including Te Reo Māori, the language of New Zealand's indigenous people
In Year 10, students are given more choice and access to an even broader range of subjects, such as Agriculture/Horticulture and Engineering.
For students who are academically ready, and based on e-asTTle results, there is the opportunity to sit the Literacy and Numeracy Common Assessment Activities (CAA) — nationally recognised qualifications that support progress into senior secondary study.
This structure ensures international students are well-prepared, confident, and engaged as they move through the New Zealand education system.
At our school, senior students (Years 11–13) follow the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA), New Zealand’s official secondary school qualification. NCEA is administered by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) and is widely recognised by universities and institutions both in New Zealand and overseas.
Students earn credits through a combination of internal assessments and national exams, with opportunities to achieve at three levels: Level 1 (Year 11), Level 2 (Year 12), and Level 3 (Year 13). NCEA encourages critical thinking, independent learning, and a broad academic foundation, while also allowing students to specialise in areas of interest.
For international families, it’s reassuring to know that NCEA is a flexible and rigorous qualification that supports pathways to global tertiary education and future careers.
