Planning Questions
Are you working by yourself or in a team?
by myself
What materials will you need for your project?
I will need a glowforge and a computer
What is your plan to create in this project?
I am going to make a model engine
What unique qualities will your project have?
it will represent a model engine
Today I tried to make a v8 engine design, but it would be to complicated, so I opted for a single cylinder design.
Today I made the engine block design for the single piston engine.
Today I created the piston and rod design for the engine.
Today I created the crankshaft design for the engine that would work with the piston
today I created a camshaft and valve design for the engine.
Today I created the pulled design for the engine, and worked on my website.
Using a computer I created A model of an engine because Next project I am going to use the glowforge and possibly the 3d printer to create the design. I may need the 3D printer because some parts the glow forge might not be able to cut. If the glowforge can cut it then I will not need the 3d printer
During this process, I learned how to create a model engine in cad. I learned how to create a piston design, a valve design as well as a crankshaft design. The only thing that I cannot create is the string that will be needed to make the pulleys move.
The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project ties to Computational Thinker because I had to use a computer to create a model of an engine. Without the computer I could not create a model of the engine, solving the problem of trying to create my own model.
A challenge I overcame on this project was Trying to make the whole thing the right size. I was able to do it by using rulers and other things to measure scale. I also changed the units in Tincercad to MM instead of inches for more precise scaling.
Given a chance to do this again, I would change How many cylinders it has. The reason why I would change it is because one cylinder doesnt represent most engines. Most engines are usually more than one cylinder. I want it to be more cylinders beacause I want to show people how engines work.
Hastings High School Career and Technical Education Program offers Agriculture, Business Management, Computer Programming, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Digital Multimedia, Engineering Design, Finance, Insurance, Marketing. My project connects to the digital multimedia CTE program at Hastings High School. My project connects to careers in 3d modeling, or 3d design. It ties to 3d modeling because I created a 3d model of an engine. It ties to 3d design because I created models.
I started splitting my project into layers
I continued splitting it into layers, geting the engine block halfway done.
I split this into layers even more, getting the entire engine block split into pieces.
I started splitting the head of the engine into pieces, getting it halfway done.
I finished splitting the head into pieces, and started on the piston and valves.
I finished the valves and finished up spliting some other things, such as the pullys for the camshafts. After this I worked on my website
Using a computer, I created a model of an engine that can be cut using a laser cutter because I have never used the laser cutter before and I want to see how it works. For my last couple of projects, I have done 3d printing, but for this project, I want to do something different. This is how and why I created this project
During this process, I learned how to use Tinkercad more efficiently. I figured out that I could just use copy and paste to get everything lined up instead of lining it up manually. This is how I learned to use Tincercad more efficiently.
The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project ties to Computational Thinker because I had to use a computer to make my project. I had to do everything using a computer. Without a computer, I would not be able to do my project because I need Tincercad. This is why my project is tied tied to Computational Thinker.
A challenge I overcame on this project was trying to finish it. I was able to do it by trying to stay persistent. This project was very hard to finish because it is very tedious and it took a long time. It was also very repetitive. This is a challenge I overcame.
Given a chance to do this again, I would change How many cylinders it has. The reason why I would change it is because it only has one cylinder and most engines have more than one cylinder. If I made it have more than one cylinder, it would be more accurate. This is what I would change

Today Tinkercad would not load, so Instead I looked for wood to buy for my project
Today Tinkercad was working, so I could start putting my project into layers, and I am going to use a numbering system to make sure I put them together in the right order.
Today I finished numbering the first cut (Left) and started laying out the pieces for the second cut. (Right)
Today I could start getting my pieces cut, so when I get home I will glue it together. I decided not to use the numbering system due to the pieces being too small.
Today I got everything for the first cut glued together.
Today I was able to get a second cut done and get a lot of the engine block glued together
Today Mr. Renner was not here so I just worked on tinkercad.
Today I got pieces for the crankshaft cut and I will take them home to put them together. I also created the piston. (See P.S if you dont know what the piston is)
today I 3d printed a part to line up the sleve so it is straight and glued it together. (the sleve is the hollow circle at the top of the engine)
Today I cut a new crankshaft because the other one I made did not work. (The piece that is a circle on the bottom middle)
Today I printed a part for the piston to make it go up and down. (Aka the rod. The rod is the white piece
P.S: You can see the rod, the crankshaft, and the piston moving in the video of 8p8. They are the parts that are moving.
Using the lasercutter, the 3d printer, and a computer, I created a model engine because I wanted a challenge to make something. I had never used the lasercutter and I wanted to learn how to use it. It was not as hard as I thought it would be.
During this process, I learned how to use the laser cutter. It is really easy to use. All you have to do is set a piece of wood in the laser cutter and send your design to Mr. Renner.
The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project ties to Innovative designer because no one has ever used a laser cutter in this class to make a model engine. I had to make sure all my measurements were 1.5mm thick and when I had to glue my pieces together I had to make sure the precision parts are lined up correctly. This is why my project ties to Innovative designer.
A challenge I overcame on this project was trying to get the parts to line up. I was able to do it by 3d printing a part to line them up. It worked well.
Given a chance to do this again, I would change how big it is. The reason why I would change it is because I had to 3d print parts that were too small for the lasercutter. If it was bigger everything could be cut on the lasercutter.

today I started cutting and printing parts for the head of the engine. The head of the eninge is the part that has the camshaft and valves.
Today I 3d printed the valves (White piece) for the engine and glued them into the engine
Today I glued in the other valve.(One with the spring) The spring works well. I also added another pulley (Top Circle thing with a white dot) and a string. These are what will spin the camshafts. (See day 4 to see what camshaft)
