The English program is non-sequential. Students can take courses in any order, with a few exceptions:
ENGL 200 (Block 2). Majors and minors should take ENGL 200 Introduction to English Studies as soon as possible because it introduces skills central to all English courses: close reading, research, MLA style, and presentations.
ENGL 300 (Block 6). Students should take ENGL 300 Literary Theory and Critical Methods after ENGL 200 because it builds on skills introduced in ENGL 200. This course is offered every other year, which means students must take it whenever it is offered in their sophomore or junior year.
ENGL 400 (Block 3). ENGL 400 Senior Seminar assesses how well students have learned the outcomes for the English program. Students should not take this class without taking (at minimum) ENGL 200, ENGL 300, and at least one other 300-level English class. Ideally, students will have finished all other courses in the program before taking this course.
ENGL 400 Senior Seminar (Block 3). The department has changed the rotation for ENGL 400 Senior Seminar (now offered in the Fall) to accommodate student teaching for English Education majors.
WRIT 351 Advanced Multimodal Composition (new course). English majors now have the option to take WRIT 350 Advanced Rhetoric and Composition OR WRIT 351 Advanced Multimodal Composition (offered in Block 4 in alternating years).
